About the Trust

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest acute Trusts in the UK, hosting more than 1.5 million outpatient appointments, A&E visits and surgery cases each year from seven hospital sites across; Brighton, Chichester, Worthing, Shoreham and Haywards Heath.

The Trust was formed in 2021, following a merger of Brighton & Sussex and Western Sussex Hospital NHS Trusts, giving the new Trust a budget of over £1 billion and nearly 20,000 employees.

It holds responsibility for all district general acute services for patients across; Brighton and Hove, West Sussex, Mid Sussex, parts of East Sussex and provides the major trauma centre for the South East. The Trust also provides specialised and tertiary services across Sussex and parts of the South East, including; neuroscience, arterial vascular surgery, neonatology, specialised paediatric, cardiac, cancer, renal, infectious diseases and HIV medicine services

3Ts Hospital Development Project

The Trust’s 3Ts (Teaching, Trauma and Tertiary Care) development at the Royal Sussex County Hospital represents part of a major 3 stage investment programme and will enable the offering of brand new, state-of-the-art healthcare facilities to the people of Brighton and beyond. This will provide;

  • Improved hospital experience for hundreds of thousands of patients and visitors every year
  • Increased capacity for the departments with highest demand, including Cancer Services, Neurosciences, Stroke Services and Intensive Care
  • Up-to-date facilities for the hospital’s Major Trauma Centre
  • New helideck for air ambulances to land on the hospital site, rather than in East Brighton Park

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in University Hospitals Sussex.  The Commercial Directorate was formed following the merger of the Trust in April 2021 to provide dedicated focus and leadership to all of our commercial activities including our Procurement function.

We have recently brought together our two, previously separate, procurement teams into a single structure working Trust-wide, which has strengthened our commercial expertise. We now have a number of senior leadership opportunities for the right candidates. These roles will be a key part of our Commercial and Procurement leadership team, ensuring that we build upon our previous successes and use our position as a system-leader and one of the largest NHS Trusts in England to deliver a step-change in the value derived from commercial activities.

This is an exciting time to join, the Trust.  Our new 3Ts Hospital, part of the Government’s Future Hospitals Programme, will open in 2023.  The hospital is a critical part of the Trust’s strategic vision, including delivery of its clinical strategy, representing an opportunity to improve system wide services for people across Sussex.  The Commercial Department is heavily involved in supporting the commissioning of the new hospital and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be involved with a local project of this scale.

In January 2022, we launched our Patient First, Planet First Green Plan setting out our approach to supporting the NHS to become the world’s first net zero health service.  Our Commercial Directorate will have a key role in supporting the delivery of this programme and the changes needed to reduce carbon levels across our supply chain and transform the way that we deliver healthcare.

The procurement and commercial team have a range of backgrounds and experience.  We are united by our desire to build strong relationships with operational and clinical colleagues and with our suppliers in order to deliver value to the Trust and to our patients.

All staff within the team have access to training and development opportunities.  The Trust offers a wide range of active staff groups including our network groups for LGBTQ+, Disability, and SOAR for our Black, Asian and ethnic minority colleagues and allies.  Membership and participation in these networks is encouraged.

As an organisation we support an inclusive culture and diversity for our staff.  We are committed to encouraging further development and growth from diverse groups, and we welcome applications from people of all abilities and from under-represented groups, which we are able to support with our range of flexible and inclusive options.

If you are an experienced procurement or commercial leader – from any sector – who wants to use their professional skills and expertise to make a difference and achieve lasting change for the population of Sussex then we would be delighted to hear from you.

Kind regards

Alison Ingoe / Commercial Director
